[ Summary ] Recent progress in multimodarity treatments have enabled us to cure esophageal cancer patients, especially those with superficial cases. We performed photodynamic therapy(PDT) from 1984 to 1997 in our institute on 22 lesions in 21 superficial esophageal cancer patients and obtained a 90.5% CR rate with no serious toxicities over Grade 3. Some problems were thoght to be those such as expensive laser devices, necessity of long hospitalization, inability to secure specimens... etc. Appropriate treatments should vary according to the indications of every patient, but PDT seemed to be a promising treatment for superficial esophageal carcinoma.
