[ Summary ] Nitric oxide (NO) is released locally during inflammatory processes of various liver diseases and is believed to contribute to liver damage. It has been reported that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is inducedin hepatocyte, Kupffer cells, vascularendothelial cells, dendritic cells and bile duct cells in the liver and might have an important role in the maintenance and regulation of microcirculation and homeostasis of the liver. We reviewed recent data that suggest a role for nitric oxide in connection with liver disease and as an important factor during the course of the disease.
