[ Summary ] Gastric mucosal damage, for example gastric ulsers associated with the adverse effects of non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, (NSAIDs) has often been seen a clinical problem. Prodrugs and the suppositories have been administered in hopesof alleviating mucosal damage. While these drugs are able toavoiddirect effects on the gastric mucosa, they are unable to inhibit the suppression of postaglandin synthesis in the gastric mucosa, via blood clrculation. Therefore, from a clinical point of view, the administration of prodrugs or suppositorieshas failed to provide a drastic reduction in mucosal Injuries. However, prodrugs or suppositories should be considered as altematives for patients such as those with rheumatoid arthrltis, who must rcceive NSAIDs, in spite of mucosaldamage.
