[ Summary ] Laparoscopic surgery is steadly gaining in popularity as a minimally invasive procedure in almost all fields of general surgery. We successfully performed laparoscopic hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma in 8 patients with liver cirrhosis from November 1994 to June, 1998. The indications for surgery are tumors in less than 4cm in size and localized in the left lobe or around the surface of the right lobe of the liver. This surgical method involved minimal incision, and the frequency of analgesia required for postoperative abdominal pain was 1.8+-1.4 times;postoperative hospital stays were 17.1+-7.4days. The mean operatil time and blood loss was 424.6+-188.5 minutes and 981+-1020.5g, respectively. The disease free survival period after the surgery was 441.6+-438.6 days. This procedure is expected to provide a new choice of treatment in hepatic surgery because of lower surgical damage, reduced pain and less hospitalization after the surgery, compared to conventional surgery.
