[ Summary ] It is difficult to perform the same type of lymph node dissection in laparoscopic colonic surgery as in the conventional open surgery for cancer of the large intestine. Therefore, indications for laparoscopic surgery for cancer of the large intestine should be restricted to early stage cancer or cancer with MP invasion in Which D2+alpha lymph node dissection is considered efficient. From the viewpoint of safety and certainty, resection and anastomosis should be done extracorporeally after the colon is mobilized intracorporeally. In performing a colostomy for inoperab]e advanced colo-rectal cancer, laparoscopy can be used to identify the optimal site for producing the stoma. Laparoscopy and laparoscopic surgery can also be applied to intestinal malignancy, and laparoscopic investigation is useful to establish a correct diagnosis and to decide on the correct operative procedure.
