[ Summary ] What is the role of cytoprotective agents in the treatment of gastritis? It has been seen in prestigious medical journals that H2 blockers as well as proton pump inhibitors are effective means of therapy for treatment of gastritis. However, very few English language papers on the effect of cytoprotective agents have been published so far. This means that these kinds of treatment are not truly based on EBM. Since the treatment of gastric or duodenal ulcers has been accomplished through use of H2 blockers as well as PPI, the role of cytoprotective agents should be transferred to the field of gastritis from this time. The future significance of the cytoprotective agents may be as a form of therapy for AGML or the repair of the gastric mucosa, after the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.
