[ Summary ] Gastritis may be classified either as acute or chronic. The treatment of acute gastritis such as peptic ulcers, centers around antacids and seems to have nothing to do with prokinetics. This is not necessarily the case with chronic gastritis, however. Basically, there is no therapy for chronic gastritis, and if any existed it would be for the treatment of subjective symptoms. Since the main subjective symptom of chronic gastritis is non-ulcer dyspepsia, treatment for chronic gastritis may be also said to be a treatment for non-ulcer dyspepsia. In this sense prokinetics will play a leading role in the treatment of chronic gastritis, and antacids, will as a matter of necessity, play a role in the treatment of chronic gastritis. They will be necessary in combating this disease.
