[ Summary ] Carcinoids of the appendix account for 10 to 30% of all carcinoid tumors. They are derived from subepithelial neuroendocronic cells. Appendiceal carcinoids occur at all ages. The estimated incidence is about 1.5 per 100,000 of the general population. The symptoms of appendiceal carcinoids are indistinguishable from those of acute appendicitis. Most cases represent incidental findings in appendices removed during laparotomy for other conditions. Symptoms of the carcinoid syndrome are rare. Simple appendectomy is a satisfactory treatment for the vast majority of patients with appendiceal carcinoid. The overall 5-year survival rate for localized lesions was 94%.
