[ Summary ] There are several variations in the shape, size, and position of the appendix. Appendicular diseases, such as acute appendicitis, perityphlitic abscess, ulcerative appendicitis, carcinoma, malignant lymphoma, carcinoid, lipoma, etc, are commonly diagnosed by the use of imaging diagnostics (barium enema study, colonoscopy, US, CT, MRI). Barium enema study is the most important for the differential diagnosis of these lesions. The appendix is usually seen as a long narrow segment. If the appendix is notrevealed by barium enema study, we must consider the existence of fecal mass, inflammatory disease, and/or tumor.
