[ Summary ] We described the clinical effects and indications for use ofpropagermanium (PG) treatment of for chronic hepatitis B, through levels of serum HBV-DNA and ALT during the course of PG therapy. About three months after administration, serum HBV-DNA and ALT levels tended to lower followed by a transient increase in those levels, in cases which are positive or negative for HBe-antigens. Those changes may be due to the anti viral properties induced by the immunomodulatory effects of PG. Our results indicated that the cases which are suitable for PG therapy are those where serum levels of HBV-DNA are rather low, accompanied with an increase in serum ALT, regardless of the HBe antigen antibody state.
