[ Summary ] The most promissing immediate approach to treatment of chronic hepatitis B is with the new nucleoside antiviral-lamivudine.
Lamivudine displays potent antiviral properties in treating HBV. Lamivudine is in phase III clinical trials with encouraging results. This drug is well absorbed orally, resulting in a profound inhibition of HBV replication, and in some patients, loss of HBe antigens, along with inprovements in serum aminotransferases. Antiviral treatment with lamivudine may be useful in treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis B.
