[ Summary ] While it has been histologically and genetically confirmed that colorectal adenoma is a precursor of caner, adenoma is the most frequentlyencountered colorctal neoplasia under colonoscopy. These lesions vary size and configuration. Considering the low incidence of coexisting cancer in colorectal adenoma and the presence of minute nonpolypoid cancerswithin the large intestine,a clear distinction of the lesion to be removed appears to be necessary in the clinical situation. Whereas familial adenomatous polyposis has been well recognized as a precancerousdisease, recent data suggest that other gastrointestinal polyposis syndromes, such as Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, juvenile polyposis, and Cowdendisease, are conditions predisposing to the occurrence of intestinal or extraintestinal neoplasia including cancer.
