[ Summary ] It is well known that Barrett's epithelium is the result of chronic injury which is usually caused by gastroesophageal reflux.
Adenocarcinoma in Barrett's esophagus is believed to develop through the metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence.
More recently, several studies focused on the involvement of p53 mutation in the process of malignant degeneration of Barrett's esophagus. The columner epithelium of Barrett's esophagus has a malignant predisposition, and once the diagnosis is made, periodic endoscopy with biopsy and cytologic study is indicated.
