[ Summary ] The following issue is discussed in this review. The criteria for the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis reagarding ERP findings have changed since 1995. Dilatation of the branch duct with an irregular configuration was added to the new criteria in addition to that of the main duct. Therefore, it is essential to visualize precisely the branch duct for the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis. For these purposes, balloon ERP-CS is superior to conventional ERP. Recently, MRCP has become availabe as a procedure of choice for pancreatography. However, MRCP has more limits for visualizing the pancreatic duct than ERCP. Whether the stenosis localized in the main pancreatic duct is included in the criteria for chronic pancreatitis remains undetermined since ductitis shows findings similar to those of chronic pancreatitis.
