[ Summary ] Histamine, acetylcholine and gastrin stimulate gastric acid secretion, whereas, somatostatin, prostaglandin and EGF/TGF-alpha inhibit the secretion. Many anti uicer drugs act on these gastrointestinal hormones. Presently, histamine receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors are the main drugs used for the inhibition of acid secretion. However, CGRP and new anti gastrin drugs are considered to produce good results in the treatment of ulcers.
