[ Summary ] Prostaglandin does not inhibit gastric acid secretion as strongly as proton pump inhibitors (PPI), but it has the effect of increasing blood flow, mucus secretion and bicarbonate secretion. It is suggested that the administration of PG improve "the quality of wound healing". Moreover the PG administration might be effective on ulcer induced by NSAIDs or ulcers that are hard to cure. Recently some reports suggest that cyclooxygenase (COX) the enzyme involved in the synthesis of prostaglandin contributes to the healing of gastric ulcers. We herein describe the relationship between COX and gastric ulcers.
