[ Summary ] Failed relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a characteristic finding with achalasia, which is caused by changes in function of Auerbach's plexus at LES. Failed LES relaxation causes impaired passage of swallowed materials, which causes symptoms, including dysphagia, weight loss, chest pain, rogurgitation, respiratory infection, insomnia, and so on.Because of the serious impact on eating habits and sleep function, patients with achalasia often feel an impairment of well-being, leading to psychological stress. Treatment with pharmaceutical agents, forceful dilatation or surgery reduces the syrnptoms related to swallowing, along with improvement in quality of life, such as the feeling of well-being.
