[ Summary ] Nutritional therapy with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) or an elemental diet not only improves malnutrition in Crohn's disease (CD) but effectively inhibits the inflammatory process of Crohn's disease. This feature distinguishes CD from ulcerative colitis. This article reviews indications for TPN in CD, how to start and maintain TPN, home-TPN, nutrients administered in TPN, lipid emulsion, supplementation of glutamine and trace elements, various complications of TPN and their management.
