[ Summary ] New criteria for the diagnosis of Crohn's disease were developed by the Research Committee of Inflammatory Bowel Disease organized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
It consists of 1. Major findings (A. iongitudinal ulcer, B. cobblestone appearance, C. non-caseating granuloma) and 2. Minor findings (a. discrete ulcers or aphthoid ulcers along the length, b. discrete ulcers or aphthoid ulcers in both the upper and the lower G-I tract).
A definite diagnosis is made when a Major finding, A or B is present, or Major finding C and one Minor finding (a or b) are present. A probable diagnosis is made when finding C, a or b, or finding A or B is present but ischemic or ulcerative colitis cannot be excluded.
It has become easy for general physicians to use the criteria, allowing early stage cases to be definitely diagnosed as having Crohn's disease.
