[ Summary ] We can occasionally use Kampo formulas for patients who are difficult to treat with modern medicine. The purposes of this article are to outline the daily medical practice of the author, in which Kampo medicine is utilized on the basis of the modern medicine, and to introduce Kampo medicine to the gastroenterologist who has not systematically studied Kampo medicine.Medical diagnosis in patients, based on modern medical technology, is very useful for selecting the most appropriate Kampo formula. The skill of the practitioner in ascertaining a patient's status from the Kampo point of view will further help to determine the best formula for that individual patient.
In this article, focuses on (1) when to decide to utilize Kampo medicine, (2) how to view diseases in terms of Kampo medicine, (3) how to diagnose patients in view of Kampo medicine, (4) reasons for selecting a Kampo formula, (5) methods of gradually altering Kampo medicine, (6) how to judge the appropriateness of the selected formula, (7) how to select the appropriate formula according to the medical diagnosis, and (8) the untoward events associated with Kampo formulas.
