[ Summary ] Hyperplasia and adenoma of Brunner's glands of the duodenum has been considered to be rare. However, recent advances in panendoscopy, duodenal hyperplasia and adenoma of Brunner's glands is now occasionally noted. This finding is most common in the duodenal elevated lesion. Based on the endoscopic findings, most are solitary and covered with normal duodenal mucosa. Sizes range from very small to more than 10cm in diameter. Biopsy for histological diagnosis is occasionally successful, but often fails to obtain sufficient tissue because of the overlying normal mucosa. The differential diagnosis between hyperplasia and adenoma of Brunner's glands must be made before treatment can be initiated. Over the 10 years to date, endoscopic ultrasonography has been used increasingly and is anticipated to provide a great deal of information useful for diagnostic purposes.
