[ Summary ] We discuss herein the pitfalls unique to laparoscopic bowel surgery. Operative colonoscopy should be avoided in order to maintain good visualization during laparoscopic procedures. Retroperitoneal visceral injury and burn injury caused by electrocautery leakage may occur. We recommend an ultrasonic aspirator and ultrasonic activated scalpel as instruments for laparoscopic bowel surgery. The thirty-three mm trocar and Kumacorn facilitate right-angled division of the anal rectum in laparoscopic low anterior resection. We use a long-type tissue-extracting bag, the Catchpurse, to avoid port site recurrence.
