[ Summary ] The abdominal wall-lift method (AWLM) has been used in Japan since 1991. There are various types of methods and devices, and a brief introduction is given. The greatest advantage of AWLM is that all manipulations can be done without considering air-leakage. Suction can be applied extensively without distorting vision, and conventional surgical instruments can be used. The restricted view has always been an opposition against the AWLM, but as regards of the direction of the axis of vision, although some experience is needed in setting it up,AWLM may actually be more favorable. In assisted laparoscopic surgery (with small additional incisions), AWLM will be most useful.
