[ Summary ] According to epidemiological studies from European countries and the USA, the risk of primary gastric remnant cancer (hereafter abbreviated PGRC) was elevated in the patients undergoing partial gastretomy for benign gastroduodenal diseases. The PGRC risk was enhanced in patients receiving reconstruction by the Billroth II method along with the length of the follow-up period after surgery. Although the inci-dence/mortality of stomach cancer in general in Japan is the highest in the world, studies in this country have failed to detect an elevated risk of PGRC. These controversial observations warrant further exploration. Helicobacter pylori infection did not appear to be related to the risk of PGRC.
