[ Summary ] Recent advances and the status quo, focusing particularly on X-ray diagnosis, of early esophageal cancer have been described herein. Improvement in the barium meal method and innovations in photographic techniques have made diagnosis a reality, even in mass screening, employing small-sized X-rays, allowing the detection of lesions as small as m2. Diagnostic accuracy for detailed X-ray examination has been greatly improved along with the better visualization of images, and discriminative diagnosis between m2 and m3 which is necessary for deciding whether there exists an indication for feasible endoscopic surgery.
