[ Summary ] | Although hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an acceptable treatment, the indications appear to be changing due to the development of less invasive local therapy. Considering the high frequency of intrahepatic recurrence even after surgical treatment, hepatic resection is assumed to be a multidisciplinary modality. Operative death, which strongly affects short-term prognosis, has been remarkably decreased owing to advances in the evaluation of hepatic functional reserve, development of sophisticated surgical techniques, and so on. The major factors which determine the long-term prognosis after surgical treatment are cancer recurrence in the remnant liver and progression of liver cirrhosis. A nationwide survey conducted by the Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan has revealed that surgical treatment is indicated for HCC patients with well-maintained liver function. |
