[ Summary ] Nutritional therapy for ulcerative colitis(UC) is controversial. In the mild, moderate active or remission state, UC patients might avoid to take of alcohol, caffeine, peppers, and sometimes lactose. In the severe active state, patients reduce energy intake, because of abdominal pain and diarrhea. Therefore, nutritional support such as total parenteral nutrition(TPN) or enteral nutrition(EN) is necessary. Nutritional support is successful in improving nutritional state and reducing the symptoms of patients with active UC. However, there is no evidence that TPN reduces the incidence of colectomy.
As another therapeutic approach, the effects of n-3 fatty acids, short chain fatty acids, and dietary fibers on the clinical course of UC have been studied but further investigations are needed.
