[ Summary ] There is an increased risk of colitic cancer in long standing inflammatory bowel disease, especially ulcerative colitis. Colitic cancers do not show the common polypoid or ulcerated appearance in the early stage. It was therefore not easy to detect these lesions endoscopically.
However, in Japan the number of ulcerative colitis patients is increasing, necessitating the detection of colitic cancers and dysplasia.
In surveillance colonoscopy for longstanding ulcerative colitis, careful scrutiny of the entire large intestine is required to detect colitic cancer and dysplasia at an early stage. Addition of the biotechnology method will facilitate the detection of colitic cancer.
