[ Summary ] Ulcerative colitis is considered to be a systemic disorder, primarily involving the colon. Although the pathogenesis is not clear in the majority of cases, wide variety of systemic, extraintestinal complications are known, and some may, in fact, significantly affect the quality of life as well as the prognosis of patients. Extra-intestinal manifestations may or may not correlate with the activity of colitis. Some of the extra-intestinal manifestations are induced by medications used to treat colitis. A thorough knowledge of extra-intestinal manifestations of ulcerative colitis is mandatory for all practitioners managing patients with ulcerative colitis.
