[ Summary ] Bloody stools are seen in cases of colitis caused by Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., Shigella spp., verotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC), Entamoeba histolytica and various other microrganisms. It should be noted that person-to-person transmission will occur in shigellosis, extraluminal invasion in amoebiasis and hemolytic uremic syndrome in VTEC infection . Stool examinations , which are essential for etiological diagnosis, include stool culture for bacteria and microscopic observations of E.histolytica in wet preparation and of Campylobacter spp. and white blood cells (WBC) utilizing Gram staining. Typically , WBCs are not seen in stools in the setting of VTEC infection. Serodiagnosis is availabie in amoebiasis and VTEC infection.
