[ Summary ] Osteoporosis is a major risk factor for fractures. Osteoporosis and atherosclerosis are common age-related conditions. Epidemiological evidences suggest a possible link between osteoporosis and atherosclerosis. Furthermore, several common pathophysiological factors related to the development of osteoporosis and atherosclerosis have been suggested. These include estrogen deficiency, homocysteine levels, lipid oxidation products, inflammatory processes, and the Wnt signaling pathway. These common factors may lead to new treatment strategies.
