[ Summary ] |
Although long hemodialysis is associated with improved prognosis, the dialysate composition can significantly affect patients' condition because of the possible effects caused by the long-time use of dialysate components. Thus, the electrolyte content of the dialysate and the acid-base equilibrium associated with its use should always be considered carefully to avoid complications in patients. Owing to the various long hemodialysis practice patterns prevailing in clinical practice, using a uniform dialysate is difficult. Additionally, currently, limited dialysate products are commercially available. Furthermore, a central dialysis fluid delivery system prevails in most dialysis facilities; thus, an individualized dialysate prescription for patients is difficult. Dialysates with newer and better composition need to be manufactured in addition to improved operational management of dialysis rooms. |
