[ Summary ] Participation in leisure activities is associated with several health benefits such as preventing functional disability and cognitive decline among older adults, reducing the risk of depression, and improving quality of life. However, the potential healthful influence can depend on the sex of the person involved and the type of leisure activity being performed. Additionally, moderate rather than frequent activity, and voluntary rather than obligatory activity may provide significant health benefits to participants. Although leisure activities are promoted on the measures for care prevention, creation of a purpose in life, and health promotion, when one recommends them to older people for the purpose of extending healthy life expectancy, we should suggest the proper type and frequency, taking into consideration sex and level of autonomy.
