[ Summary ] During the last few decades, Japan's national economic growth has improved, giving people an opportunity to live more affluent lives. Furthermore, owing to the diversification of people's values, the lifestyle in Japan has moved away from material wealth toward enrichment of the mind. This shift has been considered a cause of Japanese people's interest in leisure activities, which have become an indispensable, enriching part of daily life to help reduce or eradicate boredom. As a result, various leisure activities have gained impetus.
The first half of this paper outlines types of leisure activities as well as those preferred in Japan, while the latter part contains some recommendations for recreational activities for the elderly along with a discussion on their usefulness.
