[ Summary ] |
The relationships between sarcopenia and osteoporosis have been recently noted as the clinical topic related to interactions between bone and muscle. Although it is well known that higher muscle mass is related to higher bone mineral density and reduced fracture risk, there has been increasing evidence that muscle strength and physical performance are related to osteoporosis independently of muscle mass. Moreover, the muscle/bone relationship has become a new research field now. Among them, the actions of myokines, such as myostatin and irisin, on bones may be important in pathological states and some novel myokines, follistatin and BAIBA, were found recently. |
