[ Summary ] The skeleton is a tissue sensitive to the thyroid hormone. An active thyroid hormone (triiodothyronine, T3) has a critical role in linear growth during development and adult bone turnover and maintenance. The functions of the thyroid hormone on skeletal cells are mainly mediated by thyroid hormone receptor alpha (THα). Hypothyroidism or reduced sensitivity to thyroid hormone causes delayed bone maturation and disturbed linear growth in children and altered bone turnover and increased risk of bone fracture in adults.
