[ Summary ] |
Iron is an essential nutrient in living organisms. Iron may be hazardous both in terms of iron deficiency or overloading. Iron overloading is often associated with oxidative stress, which may cause cellular damage and immunodeficiency. In normal circumstances, therefore, iron balance is tightly regulated by several mechanisms including hepcidin. Since iron metabolism is often dysregulated by chronic inflammation as well as inappropriate iron administration in the patients with chronic kidney disease, strict iron management is required with medical intervention. The relationship between prognoses and increases in hemoglobin due to administration of iron in treatment of renal anemia have not been determined. As a result, further investigation is needed to clarify the effects of iron administration on anemia and overall prognoses. |
