【 要旨 】 骨は，骨折治癒に代表されるように，本来，再生能力の旺盛な組織である．しかし，骨腫瘍の切除後や，重度の粉砕骨折などで生じた大きな骨欠損に対しては，自家骨では対応できず，再生医療やバイオマテリアルを用いた骨組織の修復が必要となる．本章の前半では，骨誘導，骨伝導による骨再生の基本的現象の歴史的背景，骨折治癒の経時的過程を解説する．後半では，骨形成蛋白（BMP）による骨誘導現象およびシグナル伝達系について，また，整形外科領域における骨欠損の修復のための自家骨移植術や人工骨移植術を紹介する．

[ Summary ] Bone possesses vigorous regeneration activity, as demonstrated by the fracture-healing process. Bone development, repair, and regeneration are regulated by the complex interaction of cells, matrix, and local and systemic hormones or cytokines. A better understanding of the mechanisms of bone development and regeneration is essential in the fields of bone regenerative medicine and bone tissue engineering. This article presents the mechanisms of bone formation, bone induction, fracture healing, and regeneration by bone grafting.
