| [ Summary ] |
Hyperphosphatemia is the most common complication in hemodialysis patients and is considered to be an independent risk factor associated with cardiovascular mortality. However, none of the conventional therapeutic approaches appear entirely satisfactory. Dietary restrictions are difficult to follow and hemodialysis is inadequate for removal of phosphate. As a result, most patients on hemodialysis require oral phosphate binders. Until recently, none of the available agents fulfilled the criteria to be considered ideal phosphate binders. |
