[ Summary ] |
Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is characterized by increased biosynthesis and secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and hyperplasia of parathyroid cells. Disturbances in CaSR expression and function contribute to the progression of SHPT. Basal PTH secretion is increased and CaSR expression in the parathyroid gland is decreased in the progression of SHPT. Calcimimetic compounds, a novel drug for SHPT, improve function of CaSR and suppresses serum PTH levels in CKD patients. Further investigation is necessary to clarify the relationship between the progression of SHPT and CaSR. |
