[ Summary ] Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease are common age-related conditions. Mounting biological and epidemiological evidences suggest a possible link between osteoporosis and atherosclerosis, including vascular calcification. An intriguing concept is that osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease are linked by a common denominator acting in parallel on both bone and vascular cells. A space plausible candidate for such linking factors is hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia may contribute to the development of both conditions through induction of inflammatory responses to oxidized lipids, formed by lipid peroxidation. Recently, it has been suggested that Wnt signaling pathway may be anotber candidate for linking factors between atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.
