| [ Summary ] |
In diabetic patients undergoing dialysis, low turnover bone or adynamic bone disorders are often seen. There is a possibility that an excess of vitamin D or calcium (Ca) might lead to vascular calcification because of adecrease in the buffering effects of Ca on bone tissue, whereas long-term negative Ca balance can result in secondary hyperparathyroidism. Thus, maintaining neutral Ca balance may be clinically significant. The characteristics and mechanisms of bone and mineral abnormalities in these patients are summarized in this review. |
