The association of lower residual kidney function (RKF) with mortality has been reported in patients on peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis. Thus, the importance of preservation of RKF has been emphasized. It has also been reported that lower RKF is associated with organ damage, cardiovascular disease, overhydration, endothelial dysfunction, vascular and valvular calcification, carotid plaque, changes in pulse wave velocity, myocardial hypertrophy, oxidative and glycation stress biomarkers and fibroblast growth factor 23, anemia, malnutrition, erectile dysfunction, peritonitis, and sleep disorders. However, as most reports have described cross-sectional studies of a few cases, further evidence must be accumulated through large-scale prospective studies. |
