As Japan is quickly becoming an aging society, peritoneal dialysis (PD) is considered a renal replacement therapy approach from the standpoints of suppressing national health economics and improving patient quality of life. PD is classified based on the time of initiation as the PD first policy and PD last policy. Each approach can be used to reduce burden on family caregivers. Nurses specializing in PD practice (PD nurse) coordinate with the PD support team throughout the treatment period. The PD nurse plays a pivotal role in coordinating the cooperation of home care/healthcare teams when patients need PD assistance. |
