[ Summary ] |
In Japan, the estimated proportion of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients of total patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT) is only 2.7 %, while that of hemodialysis (HD) patients is 97 %. Although PD first has many advantages, almost all patients choose HD. The average age of HD patients is 69 years, while that of PD patients is 63 years; PD is not commonly used in elderly patients. Assisted PD may be a satisfactory treatment approach for elderly patients who need nursing care. PD received a boost due to the revision of the medical treatment fee schedule in 2018. With our rapidly aging society, to promote PD to young and elderly people, medical workers concerned about end-stage renal disease should reperceive the importance of the presentation to patients about information for each RRT; thus, the administration must strengthen the home support system of PD. |
