This is a summary of the scope of the 2015 JSDT Guidelines for Renal Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Renal anemia is a representative complication of CKD. The purpose of the guidelines is to improve the prognosis for CKD patients in Japan through treatment of renal anemia. However, various issues arise in clinical practice concerning treatment of renal anemia. Therefore, only issues related to the following four items were considered critical to clinical practice in those guidelines. 1) At what hemoglobin (Hb) level should the treatment of renal anemia be initiated ? 2) What Hb level should be maintained for treatment of renal anemia ? 3) Should we start iron supplementation prior to erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) therapy ? 4) What are the criteria for initiation of iron supplementation therapy ? Should there be any upper limits on iron supplementation ? |
