| [ Summary ] |
The number of elderly patients on dialysis has increased, and the need for nursing care has been growing. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is advantageous for elderly patients who cannot make frequent hospital visits easily. PD allows physicians to offer these patients in-home care. However, PD may impose a burden on patients' family members who assist with PD. Through home visits, nurses are able to support PD for elderly patients staying in their homes to a similar level as they might experience in a hospital. Minimizing hospitalization, easing patients' introduction to PD, and providing access to medical facilities without nephrologists can be achieved by collaborating with a visiting nurse. However, limited nursing insurance may limit the feasibility of using visiting nurses, which must be a further consideration. Actual and potential uses of assisted PD will be discussed together through case reports of assisted PD in our institution. |
