Dialysis patients experience a variety of physical symptoms and psychological stress. Patients therefore often enter depressive states. A patient's depressive state may be maintained by interactions between mood-related, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms. In addition, depressive mental states may be sustained by interactions between the patient and environmental factors. Care of dialysis patients who have entered a depressive state requires medical staffs to properly manage these interactions. We therefore have to examine the interactions that contribute to patients' depressive states from the patient's point of view, rather than searching for a single cause of the depressive state. In this article, we describe the depressive interaction experienced by dialysis patients. We also make suggestions concerning how medical staffs may interpret patient feedback. We described patient-staff-environment interactions and illustrated the importance of "empathy based on understanding" for medical staffs. |
