[ Summary ] |
The concepts of sarcopenia and frailty have evolved rapidly in recent years. Improved treatments for sarcopenia and frailty are very important because the number of elderly patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is expected to increase. Although there is little evidence of the efficacy of nutritional therapy for CKD patients with sarcopenia or frailty to date, the most effective treatments seems to be diet therapy, which consists of provision of sufficient energy and protein, as well as exercise therapy. In addition, protein, essential amino acids, branched-chain amino acids, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, carnitine and vitamin D may all be useful to improve sarcopenia and frailty in patients with CKD. |
