| [ Summary ] |
The number of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing in Japan. As per the Japanese statistical survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, CKD patients comprise 13 % of the population of Japan. Moreover, most of the CKD patients include elderly individuals. Sarcopenia is a common factor among elderly CKD patients. These patients often experience a decrease in body function and activities of daily living. At present, no consensus has been reached regarding the definition and diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia. Furthermore, high mortality is a problem during the introduction of dialysis among elderly CKD patients. Hence, it is essential to reconsider the diagnosis strategy and prevention methods of sarcopenia among elderly CKD patients. |
